Driving through central Nebraska puts you face to face with the diverse cultural influences of the area. Enjoy your trip through friendly towns, historically significant locales, and exciting festivals. Rolling farmland, winding rivers, breathtaking sandhills views, and remote countryside will help you relax along this journey.

History and Nebraska’s pioneering spirit come alive on the Crossroads tour. At the Great Platte River Road Archway near Kearney, learn about everything from American Indian and pioneer history to modern fiber-optic networks. Plan a stop at Grand Island’s Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, one of the top ten living history museums in the country.

In early June treat your family to Grundlovsfest—Dannebrog’s Danish celebration. The Happy Jack Peak and Chalk Mine in Scotia is the only publicly accessible chalk room and pillar mine in North America. Experience a unique Nebraska pastime, tanking. Get Tanked near Ericson takes you on a fun-filled, 4½-mile trip down the Cedar River to Lake Ericson.

After experiencing Nebraska’s Big Rodeo in Burwell, enjoy a leisurely float down the Calamus River with Calamus Outfitters northwest of Burwell. Once back on dry land, feast on a pitchfork steak supper or cream-can social. Gaze into the faces of the people who settled this land by visiting the Custer County Historical Museum in Broken Bow. Here you’ll find many original photographs by famed Sandhills photographer Solomon Butcher.
