ONE-TANK TRIPS – Chadron-Based

Experience the rugged beauty of northwest Nebraska. This path will show you natural wonders and man-made curiosities as you traverse the scenic high country.

Scenery
Towering geological formations, pine-studded bluffs and buttes, expansive sandhills, wagon wheel ruts, Old West storefronts, and lush river valleys.

History
The historical interests on this route are the ancient forces that carved the rock formation and the prehistoric beasts that roamed the area long before the pioneers came rolling through. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument near Harrison is a fossil lover’s dream come true. This 3,000-square-foot national monument houses fossilized mammals from 19 million years ago. At Toadstool Geologic Park near Crawford, you’ll see some of the most dramatic rock formations on the planet. Within the wind- and rain-eroded clay lie many fossilized mammals. Also near Crawford is the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Site, where you’ll find the bones of more than 600 primitive bison that were suddenly killed more than 10,000 years ago.

Family Fun
Show your family around the best of the West. Chadron State Park is Nebraska’s first state park . . . and it’s western Nebraska’s first name in family fun. Nestled among the towering pine trees and rugged buttes of the area, the park is full of outstanding group activities such as paddleboats, black powder demonstrations, hiking, and sightseeing. Get a pioneer’s-eye view of Chimney Rock with the Oregon Trail Wagon Train. Be sure to stop at one of the most fascinating stops in Nebraska . . . Carhenge near Alliance. This unique attraction is an exact replica of Stonehenge, built entirely out of cars. Your whole family will marvel at the sight!
