Starting in Omaha, you’ll discover the wealth of attractions that lie just northwest of the city. Escape the crowds and head for the rolling hills of Lewis and Clark country. You’ll enjoy a scenic escape into lush farmland with the option of visiting several historical and cultural attractions as well as plenty of stops that are just plain fun. While it’s impossible to visit everything on this route in only one day, it’s fun to choose a few attractions that are close to one another and enjoy the beautiful drive along the rest of the route.

History
This route is packed with attractions to entice any history buff. Among the finest is the Fort Atkinson State Historical Park , where visitors are treated to history presentations that breathe life into Nebraska’s rich history. If popular history is on the agenda, don’t miss the Elkhorn Valley Historical Museum in Norfolk. While you’re in town, pick up a piece of tangible history at one of the many antique shops downtown. Here you’ll see an entire exhibit dedicated to Norfolk’s most famous son—Johnny Carson. Get in touch with Nebraska’s prehistoric roots at the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park near Royal, one of the richest fossil finds in this hemisphere.

Family Fun
Stop by the DeSoto Wildlife Refuge near Blair to view wildlife in its natural habitat and marvel at the remarkably preserved cargo that was pulled out of the Bertrand—a steamboat that sank in 1865! Give your family a taste of farm life at the Apple Barn at Fontanelle Orchards near Nickerson. Here you’ll enjoy the fruits of Nebraska’s bounty by picking some fruit of your own.
