Niobrara National Scenic River
Truly a national treasure, the Niobrara National Scenic River is home to more than outstanding river recreation. What makes this river special is its unique mix of amazing cliffs, rock formations, waterfalls, diverse flora and fauna, ancient fossils, high water quality and relatively consistent flow from High Plains Aquifer. These things combine to make visiting the Niobrara a beautiful and memorable experience today and worth preserving for future generations. Though mostly bordered by private land, the Niobrara National Scenic River does have good access. Outfitter services are available seasonally (canoe, kayaking and inner tube rentals, private river access and camping) from private businesses. Public river access areas include: Ft. Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (day-use only, launch fee), Smith Falls State Park (fee), and Brewer Bridge (free, limited parking). Outfitter and campground information is available from the National Park Service Visitor Center at 214 W. Hwy 20 in Valentine. Visitor Center open Memorial Day-Labor Day, Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm. Valentine Chamber of Commerce also provides information. 402-376-1901 or 800-658-4024
